EyeControl is a communication system for locked-in patients which transforms their eye movements into voice. Locked-in syndrome (LIS), also known as pseudocoma, is a condition in which a patient is aware but cannot move or communicate verbally due to complete paralysis of nearly all voluntary muscles in the body except for vertical eye movements and blinking. Being a locked-in patient is an unbearable experience. EyeControl wanted to create an opportunity for such patients to experience communication with their environment and to create a sense of ability without compromising on functionality, but in a financially affordable way.
There are many similar systems like Eyecontrol, but they are not budget-friendly for most patients. So, we set out to help EyeControl to develop a high-end product, which does not fall short in its capabilities to support communication and is still affordable so every patient and family can purchase one.
EyeControl includes a wearable device that contains a camera that monitors eye movements. The user picks up words from and a screen and navigates them with the aid of a special voice menu that delivers the voice directly to his ears through the jaw bones.
Taga has designed the product which is significantly less expensive than the competition, developed the ergonomics, mechanically engineered it for serial production, and developed the UX of the voice menus. As a result of the mutual efforts, EyeControl has managed to create a breakthrough in its domain and recently raised $10M to accelerate its activities.
